 TRAIL GRANTS

Since its establishment in 1971, the Colorado State Trails Program has actively encouraged the development of a variety of trails including for hiking, biking, wildlife watching, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing.  Great Outdoors Colorado funding has provided a huge boost to the State Trails grant program that helps provide grants for trail planning and design, construction, maintenance, special projects, and equipment.

Trail grants are offered once a year through the Colorado State Trails Program http://parks.state.co.us/Trails/Grants/

Catamount Ranch Trailhead and Linkages/Teller County – This long awaited project provides the first direct, non-motorized recreation access to the 1320-acre Catamount Ranch (a GOCO funded open space project), with over six miles of trails offering a range of experiences and vistas.  Via connections into the North Slope Recreation Area, trails link with the 57-mile Ring the Peak Trail System and other regional trails in the Pike National Forest.  GOCO funds were used to provide an additional one mile of trail, reroute sections of trail with the help of 175 volunteers, and establish an entry way with a parking area.

Clear Creek Trail Replacement-Phase III/Jefferson County – GOCO funds have helped with various segments of the Clear Creek Trail which was first envisioned in the 1970s.  Wheat Ridge used GOCO funds in 2004 to construct 0.6 miles of trail that addresses safety issues.  This section of trail is a major link between Golden and Jefferson County and the Denver and Adams County trail systems.

Town of Nederland Trails Plan/Boulder County – Nederland is situated in an open valley at the base of the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area.  In 2004, there was only one developed trail in the town that could only be used by pedestrians.  In addition, the Town did not have any guidelines for trail design and construction.  With the help of GOCO, a trails master plan resulted that will provide the data and direction necessary to develop an area trails network that links to adjacent public lands and trails.
