What did you do before you came to GOCO?

Before my time at GOCO, I worked as a manager of The BlowDry Lounge Cherry Creek for a couple years. I am also a full-time student in my final year at Johnson and Wales University, and after attending the Miami campus for my first term, I returned to my home state of Colorado to make the switch from Marketing to Media and Communications.

What brought you to GOCO?

I have a passion for environmental studies and conservation, and as soon as my professor recommended the position to me it sounded like a perfect fit. I love writing and communications, and working on a small team to connect, protect, and inspire for a unique organization dedicated to open outdoor spaces and recreation is a dream come true.

What has been your favorite part of working here so far?

In my second week of work, I was able to attend the Board Meeting held in Ouray, Colorado. I have never been to that part of the state before, and during my time there I got to hike through the gorgeous fall colors. If I said that wasn’t one of the best parts of working here I would be lying. However, I have also really enjoyed getting to know the team, and every meeting and task has been fruitful and productive, so there really isn’t a least favorite part of working at GOCO.

What is your typical day like?

Every day has been different so far, but discussion with staff and the communications team is constantly happening. Every single day I spend time writing—whether it is press releases, letters, blogs, or social media content.

What are some of your favorite things to do outdoors?

I love hiking, walking, and camping. Most people think it is funny I have lived in Colorado my whole life and never skied—maybe one day! But any time spent outside is a good time, and I love both the sunshine and the rain!

What is your favorite place to get outdoors in Colorado?

Because I was born and raised in Trinidad, I love Southern Colorado. But the San Luis Valley and the mountains over La Veta Pass are special to me. Most of my family originates from Monte Vista, and I have spent a lot of time in the valley, at the dunes, at the falls, and in the mountains.

What is your most memorable outdoors mishap?

This past summer I was camping, and the lake was low. After rolling up my pants to the knees, I was trying to walk across the muddy banks to an island in the middle. After taking four big steps forward, I picked a bad spot and immediately sank waist deep into the lake. Almost every other step resulted in this deep sinking. At that point, we (the humans and dog) were all so muddy that we just continued to play in the mess. When a park ranger showed up, the conversation was cordial, but watching us try to get back across the bank to speak to him, and falling into mud every third step, was definitely entertainment.

What is the coolest wildlife you have spotted in Colorado?

It has to be a cougar. Terrifying and incredible.
